For many years operated FD from the family farm in Howell, MI, but after my
father's passing, it was sold. Six months ago I moved into a new home on a good
sized lot with a large storage shed (slightly smaller than a garage) that made a
good way to set up a back yard field day with a couple wire antennas and a 32
foot fiberglass pole for a 40m vertical.
I like to start on 40, then move on to other bands, but an intermittent noise
level problem decided to be S9+ on my 40m vertical, however my G5RV Jr, was
much more quiet on receive, but after 30 mins I moved up to 20 with mixed
results. I had to QRT around 20Z for a couple hours, but when I started up
again about 22z on 20m, condx had improved and my noise level was down. I
looked at 40 again and my noise was GONE, and now the evening became
productive. I found a freq on the low end and started calling CQ and never
touched the VFO for 3 hours. My 100w to the G5RV Jr was holding the freq, and
rarely had to deal with any QRM The band started to be worked out so did a
little S/P to catch the stations I missed. Then moved to 80 for a while. The
QRN level was reasonable on 80, and was able to work the West coast several
times.
I went QRT 0630z, and came back about 11z and cont'd on 80 then 40, and moved
up to 15 for a while, using my G5RV Jr. I had cranked the power down to 30watts
to tune my ant tuner, but later on noticed I never returned it to 100w so I had
no problem working everyone I could hear with 30watts. Skip was very short on
15, with many stations 500 miles or less, worked a lot of 1's, 2's, and 3's
from MI. 10 meters was productive too. This was first time in several years I
worked all bands 80-10 on FD.
Worked W3AO and W4IY on all bands
