This was a combination shakeout and training exercise, putting the HF station
at the Bloomington (MN) EOC on the air with digital modes. Members of the
RACES group were encouraged to come by to spin the knobs and try RTTY
throughout the day on Saturday.
The first order of business was to replace the PL-259 connector where it meets
the rig; last week's Minnesota QSO Party had a mechanical connection so good
the center pin came out. Fortunately the right parts were on hand, and the
tools were sufficient to get the job done. With the coax working again,
everything got plugged in, turned on, and warmed up. The EOC power supply was
a bit weak, but fortunately we had a spare on hand that worked well.
Propagation seemed pretty good today. There were quite a few stations on 20
meters to work---we kept things simple with just one band---and often it was
easy to work stations with a single call. We held a run frequency on two
occasions for about an hour each, making a reasonable 30-50 QSOs in both.
Some of the arcana and incantations involved with making soundcard digital
modes work well were revealed, as well as configuration tips for N1MM+. In all
we had a fun day, made a bunch of contacts, and probably fixed more things than
we broke. That's a win in my book.
