K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC.
In the 1/17 NAQP SSB, N3UM and W3GB operated Multi-2 Assisted. To
start W3GB had a good run on 20 m, 65 Qs 1800-1907 for 58/hr. Then
the rate fell so he clicked on spots and tuned for 53 more on 20 m,
then went to 40 and later 80 m. Meanwhile N3UM tuned 15 and then
40 m. 18-19Z for 25 Qs, and then did the first 2 hr. of the ARRL VHF
test. (A PVRC post said "Call this SO2C, Single Op 2 Contest"). N3UM
got just 42 Qs 21-22Z, our best hour on a slow and weak 40 m.
After supper N3UM got on 80 m. at 2320 click and tune, got 22 Qs.
Then at 2351Z he started running; instant 100/hr. rate. That
run on 80 went till 0106Z for 126 Qs in 75 min., 101/hr. Then
got just 23 more Qs by 02Z, 25/hr!
The QRN level jumped to S9 or more at ~0130Z. Impact was severe;
in 4.5 hr. 2100-0130Z both of us got 231 low-band Qs, 51/hr.
But in 3.7 hr. 0130Z to QRT at 0509Z we got only 84 low-band Qs,
23/hr. First to last Q was 11.2 hr, total BIC time for both
ops was 16.8 hr.
Compared with 1/16 NAQP SSB we made 77 fewer Qs this year, 42 fewer
on the low bands and 35 fewer on the highs. On 160 this year the QRN
limited us to just 20 Qs vs the 60 we made last year; this is most
of the low-band deficit. We got 23 MORE Qs on 20m. this year,
but with SFI = 83 this year vs 105 last year, we made 58 fewer
Qs on 15 and 10, for the net of 35 fewer QSOs on the high bands.
