Comments:
This was a tough one for my QRP portable setup - Yaesu FT-817ND / Buddipole
vertical dipole. The Friday afternoon session (00-03Z Saturday) was dreadful -
one local and one JA. The strongest signals I heard were from the South
American superstations between 22Z and 24Z on Saturday and 19-20Z Sunday. There
were marginal openings to Japan 00-01Z Saturday and Sunday, and I worked a
couple SE Asia stations with great difficulty around 02:30 Sunday.
I couldn't set up on Sunday until 19Z, and there were pretty good signals from
Caribbean/Central Am. & South America for a little while. The band died for
me after 19:30. Except for brief bursts, nobody was consistently stronger than S
4-5, and that's not good enough for me to have a chance with 18-34 dB less oomph
than most participants.
I called CQ a number of times hoping that the skimmers might hear me somewhere,
but no luck there. I was pleasantly surprised to receive one CQ answer from ZL4
in the 01Z hour on Sunday.
Only worked one mainland US contact.
Despite the bad conditions, it was nice to hear signals and make a few contacts
on what is usually a dead band most of the time out here.
73, Bob
