Comments:
Good contest, but still a challenge with a PW station. Surprised at the number
of QRP stations heard and worked. All S&P.
NovSS was the first contest I ever worked. I was a newly minted Novice and was
taking some time on a Sunday afternoon to improve my CW speed. I fired up my
(new to me) Collins KWM-2A, inserted the CW crystal for 40M, waited about 10
minutes for it all to warm-up, carefully tuned the rig, positioned my straight
key, then began to scan for someone to talk to. In pretty short order I found
a lot of stations, but they were all working way to fast for me (and I only had
a 25K slice to use). I listened for an hour to one of the stations and finally
was able (after 20 or 30 Q's) to piece together what he was sending. I called
my elmer, who lived up the street from me. He brought over the QST with the
SweepStakes announcement and I figured out what I needed to do. I found
someone sending at about 13 WPM, and put out my call (KB6STF). He came back to
me and after I got him to slow down, and only one repeat request for my check, I
had made my first contest contact - and I was hooked. With the exception of
about a 5 year break when I was living someplace that didn't allow antennas of
any kind, I've worked this contest every year. To my shame, I've never got a
clean sweep, but I figure that will happen someday whether I stress about it or
not.
I'm not a fan of phone contests, but hope to hear many of you 2 weekends from
now.
