Comments:
Maintaining a station in the Caribbean is hard when you visit twice a year.
No matter how much you plan, something will go wrong.
The 20/15 tower was in desperate need of replacement. Thanks to Felipe NP4Z,
who sent down new sections, but was unable to get here due to family issues.
I sent 3 new yagis to eliminate a rotator, and fix them in main directions as
well.
The work was planned in September but could not happen. So we had to do it all
the week of the contest, not optimal in the least. The 3 of us worked very hard
all week, and got all the tower/antennas up, including a new 160 phased array. 2
days of running wires all over the place for 100 QSOs. But it looks real good
:)
It was great to have Dan K1TO join us. He is not known for his SSB skills, but
had us fooled. I think he will give up CW now and become a full time phone op.
NOT.
And his tower skills were invaluable, we would never have gotten all the work
done without his efforts.
We were down one amp, no time to fix the spare. Luckily they held up OK.
We tested the generator on Friday, started right up. Then on Saturday
afternoon, the power went out. Of course, the generator would not start.
It even has an electric starter, but nada. This was during prime time running
hours.
Watched a YouTube on my phone on Harbor Freight generator problems since we had
nothing better to do. Cleaned the spark, filled the oil.. Almost started...
Let is sit some more, then finally after 2 hours we were back in business.
Cost us the 10K qso mark for sure.
The QTH has horrible line noise problems, probably worse now then ever.
Thank our lucky stars the old reliable TH7 at 25ft was available.
There is little if any noise on that thing, even though its close to the other
antennas. We could hear well on that antenna, and ran mostly on it. Just a
shame the new yagis were not used for running as much as planned.
Congrats to DG and TO for clock hours of 400+, with our peak rate at 441 for
60min. It was a lot of work for them, but a labor of love.
Dan asked me on Sunday during a particularly noisy run " Tell me again,
why are we doing this?"
My answer was... "It's just what we do".
Thanks to DG for his support when I get nervous, and his work ethic.
We only argued and yelled at each other once. New record.
And the support from NP4Z, V44KAI, and V44KBP was also invaluable.
CU again from V47T on CW single op.
73, Andy N2NT/V47NT
