This was quit an experience. I rented a place on Cayman Brac and took a bunch
of wire, coax and tubing to put up verticals for six bands. Everything ready
to go in time and ten minutes into the contest I had a big problem. SWR was
going from really good to really bad every few seconds as I was transmitting.
After 3 hours I had about 75 contacts and very disappointed. After several
attempts to find the problem in more obvious places, it turned out to be a
store bought coax with a connector problem. I worked it pretty hard the rest
of the time until Sunday morning when I came to my senses and took everything
down and got ready for my Monday flight out instead of doing it in the dark
after the contest. The rates were good and I had fun putting together the
antenna farm.
The 40 and 80 meter antenna was particularly nice. I made a full sized
vertical for 40, put a vacuum relay at the top and switched in top loading
wires to resonate it on 80m. It worked great.
Some excitement when I had a computer failure and thought I had lost the log.
Thanks to Steve, N2IC, for recovering the log from the corruption.
