Comments:
Together with Ian G3WVG (who operated MZ5A SO Single-Band on 40m in an adjacent
room), G3TXF operated SOSB 20m as MZ5B from the Eshaness Lighthouse on the west
coast of Shetland. The speed and ferocity of the wind throughout the weekend was
extraordinary at this highly exposed location on the edge of the North Atlantic.
For MZ5B's 20m SOSB entry a simple vertical dipole antenna was used. Even this
relatively simple antenna had to be fixed several times during the contest,
thanks to the persistent storms and high winds.
Being at 60 degrees North, we were well into the Aurora zone. This provided
some enhanced propagation on 20m as well as an occasional damp blanket effect
right across the bands.
The one Zone that got away was 34. Deciphering the unusual "MZ5"
prefix correctly was a challenge for some.
It was great fun putting on the "Shetland" CQWW Multiplier on 20m,
even though the high winds and atrocious weather made doing any outside antenna
work most uncomfortable.
