Comments:
The low bands were the best ever for me in SS from the west coast. In
particular, 80 was amazing. Whisper quiet and strong signals from all over the
continent. Even QRP stations on the east coast were easy copy.
10 meters was open (even on Sunday) but few stations transmitted to prove it.
KP2M (W2GD) CQ'd with a nice Sunday signal, and no takers.
Missed NNY. Heard a KB1?/2 sending NNY while S&Ping on 20m, but I couldn't
get him to find and call me. Somehow never heard K2NNY.
My home station is antenna-crippled at the moment and the radio room in
disarray. Ignoring W6NL's mantra about not changing spark plugs between the
practice and the race, I installed new synthesizers in one of my K3s in the
hour before the contest. Of course, the main synthesizer didn't work, so more
time spent swapping in yet another one.
Meanwhile, I worked a few contacts in what I thought was the first hour. But,
I was using another K3 that happened to be connected to a PC running XP the
speed of molasses. For the first time ever, Win-Test CW stuttered, causing
lots of repeats. That encouraged me to fix the other radio and work the
contest from that side of the station where the Alpha is broken (along with
three spares!). But I have to say that the KPA500/KAT500 are a dream to
operate, even if a bit lower in power. They made the interacting, high SWR
wire dipoles on 20 and 40 seemed like regular antennas that actually worked
some stations.
It was quickly apparent that I started in the second hour of the contest
period, not the first. Not only was I changing sparkplugs, but I was doing it
after the race started. I'll have Dave enhance his advice to include arriving
at the race on time, too. However, this found a bug in CBS. With no QSO in
the first hour, the QSO table is blank. Changed time on first QSO to the first
hour so CBS would work, then manually edited the CBS output back to reality.
On my LID-ridden journey debugging the station, I called some CQs with my W0YK
call while sending K6YT in the exchange. This helped confuse people until I
realized what I was doing. Good grief.
Wish I could have operated more during the weekend, although even with my low
QSO total, Sunday seemed worked out. So, maybe an ill-conceived wish!
K3/KPA500/KAT500
Win-Test 4.19
Horizontal Force 12 Sigma-80, Inverted-V wires on 40 and 20, 5-element homebrew
OWA Yagis on 15 and 10.
