RIG: IC 718; ANTENNA: 5 BAND HEX BEAM; POWER 80W. HAD A GREAT CONTEST. THIS IS
WHAT I WAS HOPING TO ACHIEVE SOME DAY. A GOOD ANTENNA AND GOOD TIME AT THE
RADIO. AFTER A VERY LONG WAIT FINALLY THE HEX BEAM WAS UP IN TIME FOR THE
CONTEST WEEKEND!! AND WHAT A CONTEST. OPENED WITH ZF1A - CAYMAN ISLANDS - AN
ATNO!! SURE WAS A MORALE BOOST!! FELT THE SCORE COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER -
UPWARDS OF 500 ONLY IF THE PROPOGATION HAD NOT PLAYED MURPHY'S LAW ON THE
SECOND DAY WHERE I WAS AVERAGING A CALL EVERY 10 MINS!! OTHERWISE I SOMETIMES
HAD AN AVERAGE OF 36 Q'S PER HOUR - AN ALL TIME HIGH IN CONTEST FOR ME!!!!. ALL
THESE MONTHS - I NEW TO CONTESTING - ONLY 2 YEARS - I WAS A CHASER. NOW WITH
THE HEX BEAM UP - I WAS BEING CHASED. A REVERSAL OF ROLES THAT I THOUROUGHLY
ENJOYED!!. THINGS ARE HOTTING UP - MORE CONTESTING IN LINE. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE
CONTEST THIS YEAR WERE
1. HEX BEAM UP.
2. ABLE TO SPEND IN EXCESS OF 24 HRS IN THE SHACK.
3. 5 ATNO'S
4. QUALIFIED FOR WPX CW BASIC/ 15M CW.
DISTRESS FACTORS WERE: VERY POOR OPENINGS TOWARDS W-LAND/VE/NA - IMAGINE 27
HOURS OF CONTESTING AND NOT HEARING W3LPL, K9CT ETC. BIG GUNS NOT BOOMING!!!
K3LR HEARD ONLY ON 15 MTR???? THAT IS HOW BAD IT WAS THIS SIDE OF THE GLOBE.
HOPE TO DOUBLE THE HIT RATE AND CROSS THE 1000 Q'S NEXT YEAR.
