Started out with a footswitch that wouldn't switch -- lost most of the first
half hour trying to figure out the problem. Got it going well enough to run
again, but the Murphy strike put me off my game.
10M was down from last year, but 15M was better and lulled me into staying with
the great rate. 20M was flat by the time I got there -- strategy matters and I
clearly blew it by staying on 15M too late in the day. Took a two-hour-plus
break from 2210z to 0022z, and 20M was dead flat by then.
Last year, my best 20M rates were actually an hour later than I went to 20M
this year. Trying to follow last year's pattern was a big mistake. Ended up
with far too few Qs and mults on 20M, and I compounded the problem by staying
too long trying to salvage things, so 40M was worn out by the time I arrived --
just 34 Qs and 20 mults there.
Knowing I was already too far off my game to recover, I took two more hours off
later in the evening, but got back on for the last hour and a half or so. That
was miserable, but I did pick up a few mults on the lower two bands. 80M was
not in good shape; however, I fared better than last year, probably thanks to
the improved array. 160M was about equal to Jan. 2013.
Bottom line: I messed up my band choices but still had lots of fun.
