Since the advent of the QRP category in Sweepstakes a quarter of a century ago,
I've done about 10 of these, sometimes with a bit of success, and sometimes not.
Lately I've taken to doing it every other year or so. This has been my best
result so far. Conditions were excellent. In the late afternoon, all 5 bands
were open. I like to be aggressive, and try to run a lot. With so much space on
the bands, it was easy to find and hold a run frequency, though I got run off a
few times. I try to run whenever possible, because my rates are higher than
S&P except for the first few hours of the contest. My best hour was 50, all
S&P, the first hour. My best run rate was 45 on Sunday. It started out with
a good omen. I turned the radio on, made a few warm up QSOs on 15 meters, and
then started tuning. At 21:00:01 I came across VY1EI, and worked him before the
hordes descended. By late Saturday I had only 5 sections to go, and went to bed.
Sunday I quickly picked off EWA and AK. That left ONN, VE4 and NL. ONN called in
in the mid afternoon, followed a few minutes later by VE4. After I worked the
first VE4, 4 more called in. That left NL. In spite of a lot of tuning and
CQing to the east on what I felt were the most likely bands, I never saw, heard
or smelled one. In 10 days I'm going to J7 for CQ WW CW with VO1MP. I think that
should count.
