Comments:
In role of ARRL director, I was chained to the ARRL Southwestern Division
Convention during the weekend of the ARRL CW DX Contest. Noticed the W1AW/7
station, which appeared to have spare available operator time. Got permission
to use the station and callsign in the DX contest from ARRL.
Station-manager KE7DX set things up so I could operate, although there was no
ability to send CW from the logging computer. Found a keyer and paddle for sale
in the swap meet, and owner K7YMA kindly postponed any potential sale that
weekend to let me use it in the contest.
Operated primarily before and after exhibits were open. Also sacrificed
participation in Saturday night's convention dinner to keep the station going a
few more hours.
With 100 watts and a tri-band beam about 18 feet above flat ground, the station
wasn't the loudest. No responses were ever received from CQs, and consequently
all QSOs resulted from stations called.
With no power-line noise, copy was actually pleasant, which is the opposite of
my current situation at home.
Convention ended at about 8 PM local time on Saturday night. Station closed,
equipment went home with it's owner, and I went to a motel this year rather
than driving home at night for 6 hours and then getting on for a few hours
while exhausted.
