Comments:
My inverted L blew down this past Thursday, and I didn't have a makeshift
antenna up until Saturday night. The original inverted L was up 60 out 75, but
the makeshift one for the contest was up 60 with the extra 75 sloping down to
about 10 feet at the end. I didn't have time to tune it, so I ended up with a
4:1 SWR on the feedline (good for a few dB loss) and ended up using a T-network
to tune it which wasn't designed for 160. My best guess for the sum of these
losses is around 6dB. Also on Thursday, my shack computer crashed and I was
forced to improvise and borrow a laptop, which has no serial port from which to
send CW.
Since I obviously wasn't going to make a score, I focused on finding states ID
and MT to finish up my 160M WAS, and doing a few hours of CQing to brush up on
pileup skills for the upcoming ARRL DX contest. The makeshift antenna did OK,
but it surely wasn't nearly as good as the inverted L I usually run.
Thanks everyone for the QSOs and a fun evening on 160!
