Stew Perry Topband Challenge - Summer
Call: K9MMS
Operator(s): K9MMS
Station: K9MMS
Class: Single Op HP
QTH: IL EN51
Operating Time (hrs): 1.5
Summary:
Total: QSOs = 28 Total Score = 64
Club: Society of Midwest Contesters
Comments:
K3 + AL-80B (800 W) + Win-test.
TX: Inverted L and Marconi sloper.
RX: EWE, mini-reversible Beverage, and INV V.
Very slim activity and very high noise. Even with K3 NR/tweaks and RX
antennas, most signals were not much above the noise level. Longest distance
QSO was with KV4FZ, but it took many calls before he responded. All but 5 QSOs
were via CQs. There were a few stations that I just could not get sufficient
copy of their calls -- sorry for that.
I listened again after a few hours, but only heard 3 stations and had worked
them before. Decided it was not worth losing sleep. I was looking forward to
a fun time on top band, but this one was a fizzle. Usually, 160 meters during
the August NAQP is much better that this was.
So far, the Es season on 6 meters has not been great this year. The recent
report about the sun perhaps going into a long Maunder minimum period is
discouraging. On the bright side, maybe the low bands will be better for a
long time.

Gary
