Comments:
This is my first serious all band entry in WPX. CQWW and ARRL DX are my
favorites and in the interest of family harmony I limit my all out full weekend
efforts to those four contests. However the WRTC qualifying point value for WPX
is higher than ARRL DX so decided to go for it this year (though me qualifying
for WRTC from the same call area as N2IC and K5GO/N5DX is dreaming).
Another reason I don't go all out for WPX CW is it coincides with Memorial Day
and we always have social events that weekend. This year was no exception and I
used a little over 4 hours of my off time to go to a party with my XYL on
Saturday afternoon (missing the best hours for Europe on 15 meters of course).
Then I miscalculated my off time and ended up losing my last 30 minutes and, you
might know, I had one of my most productive runs (32 Q's and 7 multipliers).
While I was able to run with fairly decent rates those contacts were nearly all
one pointers. Poor conditions, combined with low power from Texas, just doesn't
cut it into Europe. Iâ??m still in the process of rebuilding my 40 meter Moxon
and not having a gain antenna for Europe on that band with its higher DX QSO
value also hurt.
Mid-way through the contest my WinKey went totally crazy â?" sending random
code that I could not stop until I pulled the plug. I spent about 15 minutes
looking for the problem before deciding to replace the WinKey. Fortunately I
have a second one I had purchased for WRTC 2010. Problem solved but it also
cleared up some other issues Iâ??ve been fighting for months that I thought
were either in the computer or logging program. I had been having intermittent
problems with the escape key not working (it is used to halt sending with TR4W)
and the last letter of a call entered from the keyboard sometimes being chopped
off. All this went away with the WinKey replacement â?" what a relief!
Afterwards I remembered I had a similar problem when I first used that WinKey
and traced it down to a bad solder joint. WinKey users should take note as the
problems I was having were not obviously coming from the keyer which worked
fine in standalone mode.
Lots of antenna work to do before next fallâ??s contest season. Sort of glad to
get a rest from operating!
