Wow!! What a fun contest, and it was even MORE fun this year...a PERFECT way to
test the station out before a more competitive effort in WPX coming up.
My original plan was to get on for a few hours on 15m just to horse around. I
got on the just after 9:00am and heard NY3A with a nice pileup and run
happening and noticed that one hour in the contest he had managed to put about
160 stations in the log! Congratulations Steve for your excellent hard core
effort!
5.5 hours later and with 600 QSOs in the log with my shiny new 15m monobander,
I ran out of time and had to attend a planned meeting.
The rest of the contest became about DXing and operating the 'off' bands while
watching some TV inbetween. 20m was suprisingly open and effective after
8:00pm in the evening (when the competitive folks were on 40 & 80 listening to
a lot of static).
Somewhere around 9:00pm the Asiatic russian opening peaked and there were
several 35db/9 signals from the big stations over the pole, with a few JAs also
calling in.
It was interesting to observe Frank W3LPL's new super-skimmer validation
service put out repeated skims for OH0R after midnight on 20 meters.
I went there, heard a very readable OH0R and an S5 RI1ANC! Even more
interesting was listening to a 4O3A call them. Maybe there is some hope for 20
meters at night.
Many thanks go to NY3A, K1RH, N3SB and N3YIM for installing my new 15m
monobander last weekend, I have no doubt that contributed to the improved
performance - along with a lot more sunspots.
Bring on WPX!
73,
Jim WX3B
