Congratulations to my friend Scott Redd (K0DQ) and to Alex at K3CR for posting
some super scores! It was nice to hear 10M starting to open up once again...
This contest was supposed to be guest-operated by Mladen YT6W/VY2NU - but he
got sick on our failed trip to Spratly and never fully recovered. Although he
made it to PEI for CQ160M CW at the end of January and posted a great score, he
thought it best not to trek through the chest deep snow here on PEI and tried
instead to give it a go from K1LZ in Massachusetts as a single op. We were
hoping for a real horse race for awhile as this contest started... But even
that was too much for him given his weakened condition and he was forced to
quit when high fever overwhelmed him early Sunday morning. Too bad...
Personally, I think Mladen probably would have bested this score I am
submitting had he made it to PEI as he is that good an operator. He is surely
better at doing SO2R than I am.
I operated without a rotatable 20M beam over the weekend - the motor was stuck
on Europe and I blew two control boxes trying to right it in almost zero degree
weather during the week.
Mladen helped me put up a rotatable triband dipole at 45 feet on my 6M tower
when he was here and that served as my "multiplier antenna" for everything
outside EU and South America. It worked far better than expected for things
like KL7/KH6/JA/VK/ZL etc.
Sorry to hear about the troubles over at VY2TT - Ken has had some really tough
luck keeping his place fully operational - but if it had all been there, I am
sure he would have posted a great score.
Thanks to all my old friends and FOC'ers who called in to say hello. I am most
grateful to those who did.
