Comments:
This was my second year in a row operating from Subi Ricon on the island of
Bonaire. Noah K2NG has a superb hill top QTH that over looks the Caribbean
when beaming the ham populated regions of the world.
In 2010 we failed to improve the low power world record that we set in 2009
from Aruba as P40R. That was a big disappointment but gave me much incentive
to make some changes for this year. There wasnâ??t much to be done on the
radio side as we already run SO2R with a pair of 756 PRO3â??s (with Inrad
roofing filter mods) network two laptops, use two NIR-12â??s and two DXP38â??s.
Maybe next year we will change to K3â??s. Not convinced that will make much of
a difference. It would help with the baggage carrying as we are up to nearly
200 lbs of stuff that we drag along! The airlines continue making things more
difficult and expense. Last year one of my radios sustained $200 of damage.
With better packing, everything made it without damage this year.
As we only run 100 watts, I need to get every last db of signal to the desired
population bases of US and Europe. With the help of local ham PJ4LS (Hans) we
built a 2 element delta loop for 80 meters. A day and a half later using
nearly 600 ft. of wire and cutting down numerous thorny bushes and trees that
were in the way we had us an antenna. On air testing showed this antenna to be
consistently 2 S units better than the existing dipole. Itâ??s not every day
that one can find 10db! It was only planned as a temporary antenna but we
left it up for RD3AF who is coming to operate the ARRL DX CW as PJ4A this next
weekend. I think Noah needs to make it a permanent addition to his compliment
of antennas.
We also built a 10/15/20 triplexer and purchased a Stack match II. Noahâ??s
high band antennas consist of a C3 and C31XR. Both have single feed lines.
The triplexer allowed me to run 15 and 20 simultaneously on both antennas. We
split the power with the Stackmatch, set one antenna on W9 and one on G. It
stayed that way through the entire contest.
Results: On 80 meters we more that tripled our QSO total from last year. I
was actually able to get some runs going. Last year it was all S&P. 40 meters
was down about 100 qâ??s but 80 meters more than made up for it. 20 meters was
85 qâ??s better and 15 was 300 qâ??s better. Total multipliers were 71 better.
Overall, the raw score is 25.4 percent better than last year. We will see what
the log checker does to the final score.
I had a Skype conversation with W0YK(P49X) after the contest. His 2011 and
2010 results were nearly identical so I tend to contribute my score improvement
to the things I did with the antennas/feeds and was not due to band conditions.
Speaking of band conditions, we did experience a 20 meter band black out early
Sunday afternoon that lasted about 1 hour. I was able to continue running on
15 but 20 had absolutely no signals! Initially I thought that my radio had
broken but the other radio showed the same results. Really weird! Probably
lost 50 qâ??s over the incident. Was considering taking a break, but really
didnâ??t know how long the black out was going to last.
Bonaire becoming a new country on 10/10/10 certainly didnâ??t hurt the score. I
received quite a few NR 1â??s. Also, most patiently hung around when the pile
up got a little deep.
Thank you to all who worked me. We worked several stations on 4 bands. I hope
everyone had as much fun as I had! The weather in Bonaire sure beats what
Illinois has to offer this time of the year. I will have the logs uploaded to
