Comments:

This was only a part-time effort. XYL & I had dinner obligations Friday night.
By the time I got home (after 11pm), the band was quiet and I didnâ??t feel like
beating my head against the keyboard trying to work stations M/S.

Saturday brought fits and starts between honey-do chores and trying to get some
on-air time for one of my favorite contests (b/c you just never know what may be
in store). Even though I started listening about 7AM, I had only logged a few
stations before 10AM because of all the interruptions.

And of course, just as I was about to pounce on ST2AR some time a bit after
10AM, the XYL calls me to do another chore. 50 minutes later, I finished it,
got back to the radio and regrettably ST2AR was a â??GONE PECAN.â?? I listened
as he QSBâ??ed right into the dirt, with no chance to work him. That was my
biggest disappointment. So I was only able to get in about 11 hours of
operating Saturday and 3-1/2 hours on Sunday.

My best DX and highlights were FR1GZ answering my CQ on Saturday @ 1715z with
my beam to the Northwest (was that unexpected) along with a call from V51YJ on
Sunday @ 1726z, again with the beam to the Northwest! Overall, I was able to
get 34 countries, not including the USA and Canada.

30% of my Qs were from CA, TX and FL. In total, I was able to work 44/50
states, missing ME, VT, AR, WY, AK and IL (Illinois- no way! Yes way! â?" How
can that be? There are always tons of those guys â?" dunno what happened
there.) I missed six of the Canadian provinces (again, where was VE5, as I
missed that one in the 160M contest too), plus QC (inexcusable miss), LB, NU,
NWT and YT. And of course, with the new Mexican State mults, I snagged 16 of
32.

Much of my time was spent CQing. I worked a few S&P that I tuned for and found,
but pretty much ran for the time I was on. Conditions at times went from the
penthouse to the outhouse. And on Sunday, I watch the band go dead for about
90 minutes midday â?" and then miraculously come back to life! I guess the
E-layers were reorganizing! And for those of you that were patient enough to
give me repeats (due to the severe QSB at times) so I could log the QSO, thanks
ever so much and thanks for being there! You make the contest.

In summary, I bested last years score by 200k points with 2.5 hours less on-air
time â?" not too shabby - so I would say things are definitely improving, albeit
slowly.

To all, please have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Hope to
work many of you in the New (contest) Year, either with my call or our club
call, W5RU.

73, Ted, KN5O
