Comments:
Well, that was fun! Nice to see so many huge scores rolling in.
The big improvement here over last year was that the local line noise problem
was fixed back in January.
Love hearing all the expeditions and available mults -- it seems like a
bottomless pit. Only zone not heard was 23. Lots of holes in the multiplier
list despite a decent 2nd radio effort.
A few comments by band:
160 - Upgraded GP to 6 elevated radials. No reason to add more until the rx
side is improved. Have Beverages to NE and NW, but they just don't seem to do
well on 160. Highlight was finding VK6DXI all alone Sunday AM.
80 - Upgraded to a 2L inv vee to EU. While it seemed that things were going
better on that band, it still made sense to stay on 40 most of the time as the
better rates were there. Still have not ever had a 100 hour on 80 in WW CW
from here. 80 is the band that us W4s consistently get crushed on.
40 - Fixed the upper 2L after several years, so had 2/2 fixed to EU. Rotator
not yet working again, but don't feel like it hurt too badly. Started with 7
hours over 100 with 40 as the primary band.
20 - Same old 4/4. Massive strong pileup Saturday AM very much like in the
Caribbean -- had an hour of close to 200. 2nd day seemed 50 dB down from that,
perhaps due to the increased K index -- called CQ for 5 minutes with zero
answers at the same time as the Saturday explosion. Despite that, heard BY8AC
(who only got "K1?") and 9M2CNC before our Sunday SR.
15 - 4/4/4. Never really got going here. Had a mediocre 112 hour here
Saturday, so went back to the bigger rates on 20. Sunday seemed better, but
rates were still 110ish. Turned the top beam SE for a while both mornings and
got absolutely nothing to call in LP or even from SA/Caribbean.
10 - 6L @ 50'. 1st day was miserable with 17 QSOs. Found the band open to EU
on Sunday and finally moved there to try and run. Had 109 Qs in a little over
an hour, adding many W EU mults to the log, so this was the treat of the
weekend. Thought maybe this was a SE USA exclusive until the W1 numbers proved
otherwise. ST2AR was incredibly loud, yet hard to work thru his EU curtain. As
usual, missed many of the Caribbean mults as they skipped right over FL. 11
years ago, theoretically one sunspot cycle ago, was an amazing experience at
8P9Z with terrific 10M condx. I really thought that 2010 would be the breakout
year for 10M as this new cycle ascends.
Thanks again to Terry, N4TB for his recent assistance in many respects.
No encore showing in ARRL 160 for me this weekend, but planning on hitting ARRL
10 hard again.
