Comments:
With kids, family and work taking up so much time these days, there hasn't been
as much time for contesting, so I've sort of started to treat CQ WW CW as my
yearly extended contest fix. This year the obvious choice again was a single
band entry, so I could focus my time more efficiently.
I did 80 meters last year, so I decided that 40 meters would be next. Mind
you, I don't have any real antennas, so it's not like I think I'm going to win
or anything - it was just for contest fun.
As for antennas, I love having a variety of them, because you can never have
too much wire in the backyard trees. I started last week with two dipoles on
40, and decided to add two more antennas, to give me four to play with during
the contest.
One of the new antennas was a simple sloper aimed at EU. That worked very well
and beat the regular dipole that's aimed at Europe by a few db. For whatever
reason, this antenna worked great for stations in Zone 14.
The second new antenna that I quickly built the day of the contest was a
full-wave inverted L. Just take 105 feet of wire (40 meters) and run that
thing up in the air and then over to another tree or support. The inverted L
on 40 actually has some broadside lobes (according to Cebik) and this antenna -
for whatever reason - played great for Zone 15 & 16 stations.
When the contest began, my only goal was to grab the W3 record for 40 meter low
power, which was at 63k. The post-it notes were strategically deployed on the
shack monitors to remind me of all the details, and the march to those figures
and to DXCC kept me very motivated.
At 0001, I put ED9M in the log for my first contact and figured that was a good
sign. As expected, just about every other contact was a struggle. That's what
you get with 100 watts. I fine tuned the way that I deal with pileups during
this contest and made some headway on that - but still - luck was the major
thing when you are dealing with howling pileups and a barefoot rig.
After six contacts in the first 12 minutes, I gave the kids a bath and started
getting them into bed, returning just after 0100z. Now the next 12 hours were
mine, as I make a point of trying to stay up all night on the first night of CQ
WW, because the family is sleeping.
Two years ago, I had worked stations in Europe as late as 1100z on 40, even
though it had been daylight there for hours, and I figured it would happen this
time again. This year's winner was SJ2W, whom I heard for many hours after
sunrise on both Saturday & Sunday.
There wasn't much down time on either day. Saturday afternoon, I made my first
contact on 40 meters at 1755z, which is 12:55 pm local time, with a G. On
Sunday, an HA8 was first into the log at 1854z.
Also fun were the sunlight QSO's with a variety of stations in Zones 17 and 18.
I stumbled on RT0C in Zone 19 on Sunday with no pileup, but couldn't get
through. Same thing happened to me with Zone 21 (A73A) and then on Sunday
evening with VK6AA in Zone 29. But they couldn't hear me. Oh well.
There many, many highlights. My favorite was getting DXCC in one weekend. I
know that this is standard for many high power guys, but when you operate with
just backyard tree wire, gettin DXCC overall is great, let alone in 48 hours.
Hats off to 4O3A for being #100 in the last hour.
The weekend brought one new one, Sierra Leone. I was sitting at the rig,
closing my eyes for a minute or two on the second day when I suddenly woke up
to the sound of a station calling CQ at exactly the spot where I had stopped
turning the dial. Five seconds later, 9L5VT was in the log.
Other than a handful of VE's and one station from CT, all of my contacts were
S&P, though I did try to CQ a number of times.
The worst part of the contest was not getting any JA's in the log. I sure
called and called, but never got over the hump.
What a fun time. Can't wait to plan for next year!
