My wife decided to visit her brother in LAX this weekend so I could operate the
contest :-) My goal was first to beat last year's score, then to break 500
QSOs, then to break 600 QSOs, then to break 500K points. I did not think the
score was possible after extrapolating my log from last year.
As usual, no 80 meters (no antenna). I knocked off at 0130z on Saturday night,
went back to check the bands a few hours later, nothing workable, so I packed it
in until 6 a.m. local time the next morning.
This is my first experience of a "real" European opening on 15 meters since
moving to Colorado. I was not disappointed! Sunday morning seemed to be the
better of the two days. Some of the stations were S9+20! Before the contest,
I would not have guess that I'd end up with more QSOs and mults on 15m than
20m! 10m was spotty, except to PY and LU which seemed to be in a good part of
both afternoons. I didn't work anything outside of North/South America. My
only 4-band QSOs were CE4CT, LT1F and PJ2T. I never used to think CE/Zone 12
was a sure thing, but they were all over the place this weekend.
It was disappointing to see how many hams from the USA (including some
respected DXers) transmitted above 14,347 KHz or below 7,128 KHz. I will admit
that I made two out-of-band QSOs, but they were WAY out of the band. Usually my
microKEYER prevents me from transmitting out-of-band, but the way split works
with WriteLog, I had to disable this feature so I didn't have to make the
transmit VFO "active" after going split on 40m.
Thanks to all the DX that pulled my signal out of the mud/noise/QRM/etc.
Here's the per-country count. I still missed single-weekend DXCC (only 94
worked, including IT9), maybe next year.
