I have only operated radio teletype once before and I thought that this contest
would be a great way to try this mode again. I was busy during the summer
burying Heliax and rotator wires in a long trench going to the tower as well as
adding a second 40m beam and I had not been on the air since March. I rushed
to get everything hooked up for this contest. Since the tower was hit by
lightning during the summer and I had little time for troubleshooting, I was
happy to discover that once I connected everything up it worked perfectly.
Since I am not an experienced RTTY user, I hoped that I would be able to make
QSOs on this mode without the operator problems that I had during the previous
RTTY contest that I participated in. I also had other concerns, it had not
rained in weeks and as luck would have it thunderstorms and rain were
predicated for most of Sunday. I chose to operate on 20m single band and the
contest started well with nice runs into Asia and the western states. In the
morning and afternoon I had fantastic runs into Europe and saw my score building
nicely. Between work and staying up late getting the station ready, I did not
start this contest very rested so I took a long rest break on Saturday night.
On Sunday morning I had another nice opening into Europe, however unfortunately
the predicted thunderstorms started several hours after sunrise. They were
not that close and I continued to operate, however the S9 +20dB static noise
from the storms forced me to search and pounce for stations, working only the
strong ones above my noise level. While it rained the remainder of the day,
luckily the thunderstorms subsided after a couple of hours. It is strange
operating a mode where I have to rely on my computer to decipher the tones
rather then my head, and I hope that I interpreted the text properly. It was
fun trying a new mode and it looks like I set a new US 20m record in the
process.
Thanks for the QSOs , please QSL via WD9DZV.
