Comments:

First, a big THANK YOU to RA3AUU and all of the WRTC organizers, volunteers,
judges, referees, and financial supporters for putting on such a hugely
successful event. I would especially like to thank Victor, RK3BX, who helped
so many teams get their radio equipment through Customs at the DME airport. We
just could not have done it without him.

Thanks also to the fine team of volunteers who put together our station at
field site 303: Stan US0SZ, who came all the way from the Ukraine, Vlad
RN3DLL, young Evgeniy RD3ARX and his brother, Anton.

You can see pictures of our site 303 and our tent here:

http://us0hz.ucoz.ua/index/wrtc_2010/0-26

Everything was all ready to go as soon as we arrived. We just had to arrange
the tables and set up our station. The generator never quit.

Thanks also to N2IC for picking me as his teammate. This was my third WRTC and
definitely the most exciting. I previously operated with K7SS for WRTC-96 in
San Francisco and with K3NA for WRTC-2000 in Slovenia.

The contest started slowly for us, but we finished strong. About 70 minutes
after the start, a big thunderstorm rolled through, and the lightning hits just
got too close. You can hear the static crashes and corona noises (?) that drove
us out of our tent and into a nearby vehicle, here:

http://bit.ly/R39M_lightning (2 MB mp3 file)

N2IC is operating 20m SSB in the left channel, and I'm operating 15 CW in the
right channel. What you can't hear is the loud thunder that immediately
followed the static crashes, indicating that the strikes were getting very
close.

After 8 minutes off the air we returned to the tent, but left it once again a
few minutes later after another nearby hit and more scary noises in the radios.
In total we had about 23 minutes off the air due to fear of getting hit by
lightning. At our request, our easy-going referee, Vitaly, RN4WA called HQ to
ask if the contest was being suspended for safety, but it was not, so we lost
ground quickly and fell to 41st place (we found out later).

By the end of the contest, Steve and I finally got the hang of interleaving
QSOs smoothly between us (only one rig is allowed to transmit at a time). We
had great rates on Phone and CW, and in the last two hours alone moved up 8
spots from 26th place to finish in 18th place.

No sound cards were used.
No Six Pak -- left rig handled 80 and 20, right rig 40, 15, and 10.

None of the above gave us any problems despite the high heat and humidity.
Fortunately mosquitoes were not a big problem at our location.

K5WA loaned us a spare K3 for backup, but we did not need it -- thanks Bob!

N2IC built a diplexer that allowed us to share the tribander between 20m on one
radio and 10 or 15m on the other. It worked great.

Overall, WRTC-2010 set a new standard for fairness and a level playing field,
quite literally. I can't wait until the next one.

73,
Bob, N6TV
