Hope conditions on 20 thru 10 were just a glitch in the overall trend. 20m was
marked by long and deep QSB fades for the early going on Saturday--so much so
that I fired up the rototiller and got the vegetable garden prepared for
planting. By mid afternoon Saturday (local) things picked up a bit, but not so
much as to chain my efforts to 20 meters. Propagation on 15 was good, but
activity was low. Heard and worked only a single station on 10: LW1DTZ, who
had a booming signal into New Mexico. More SA's could have been worked, but
they just weren't on 10 meters (when I checked at 2200Z).
40m provided a nice run, which was the only real run of the event for me.
Activity was low on 80m, but the conditions were nice and could have supported
many more operators.
Grandpa Murphy offered a challenge--the soundcard became intermittant just as I
made the move from 20m to 40m on Saturday. I played with audio cables and
recording volume controls. The Dell desktop has a quirky soundcard anyway and
uses "Audio ESP" to select between Line In and Mic In depending on which jack
is used--front panel or rear panel. ESP has nearly always gotten it backwards,
but even playing with ESP, the card died a slow death. Unfortunately, I was
trying to work N4ZZ on 40m when the card became intermittant. I could call
him, and I could hear him send his exchange, but the MMTTY engine's FFT was
dead blank for his every attempt. I ended up transferring the N1MM log to the
(tiny) Acer Field Day laptop and switching the microKEYER as well and
continuing the contest with a "low end" but very workable el cheapo laptop's
soundcard. A new soundcard is now on the shopping list for Mr. Dell's
machine.
On Sunday, 20 didn't open to EU until just before we left for Easter services,
but for about 15 minutes, EU signals were quite strong, a welcome change.
Thanks to all for the Qs, and special thanks to N4ZZ for answering my S&P call
that "one last time" that got the Q into both of our logs!
