Comments:
*Very* weird propagation on 20 and 15. Had to use the K3's preamp on 20m and
15m! Would be going great guns then, suddenly, "lights out" with very few
signals on the band. Situation improved somewhat on Sunday but propagation
still very spotty.
Awesome to work a bunch of ZL on 10m Sunday afternoon in addition to the
Central and South Americans and some "nearby" Africans - not too shabby for a
"dead" band. Excellent 130/hr 40m runs for 2-hrs on Saturday afternoon and
another 1/2-hr on Sunday. Otherwise, 90 - 95 - 100/hr runs that would peter out
after 15 - 30 mins, followed by lots of S&P. Would have been a good chance to
learn SO2R, but haven't had time to assemble the boxes.
Many examples of "worldwide" propagation on 40, 20 and 15. Was called by 5W,
KH6, KL7, ZS, 7Z, JA and many EU in one 15-min period on 40m Saturday. Worked
5H, KH6, TX4T, OX, XE, ZL and miscellaneous EU / AF / SA / CA inside about
1/2-hour on 15m on Sunday, often with the beam turned in a "wrong" direction.
160m conditions seemed good, but few stations were available.
Overall, a disappointing performance. Surprised to see that I put in my usual
30+ hours: slept hard both nights after an exhausting couple of weeks leading
up to the contest and missed the "dawn" low-band opening on Saturday. Once
again, the K3 did a *great* job of unlayering stations that were calling on top
of each other because of their physical proximity.
