Comments:
I guess this was the last contest of the summer season and working them low
power has been no walk in the park. Nevertheless whilst frustrating at times it
has been an interesting and overall enjoyable experience. Guys do forget that
sunspots or not we get the midsummer doldrums with maximum absorbtion that
pretty well kills daylight propogation hf wise. Many contest rules now allow
'assistance' as the set formulae without subdivision and some do not make any
power differential in some categories. I operate low power, single radio 2 vfo,
do not use SCP, cluster or other aids. No kudos in this, its just the way I like
to do it and get how I get my kicks but I am looking forward to filing all of
the results in due course to see how these 'old' ways compare with competitors
who avail themselves of them. After all if they actually want to win they need
to use whatever is available, if they don't the 'other guy' surely will.
Talking of 'kudos' here I do puzzle why the 'assisted' category in CQWW single
op category is so poorly supported whilst the unassisted section booms - maybe
guys hanker after the old ways after all - but that is a subject for another
day.
Now to this contest - band conditions were spotty again, all summer from here
there has been a problem on all the bands with most places from the east and of
getting to western eu. After dark we did get good sigs from usa on 20 mtrs. On
40 & 80 short distance stuff was difficult but USA was very good on both bands.
NY2O is not a call I know, whatever station he used has really put something
together with outstanding signals on all bands.
10mtrs didn't want to play and 15 needed many visits to catch brief openings.
You know band condx are bad when on 20mtrs you can find empty slots under 040
to run and carry on until slated without being stepped on, not that there was
ever any depth to the pile, two at most and many minutes of zilch callers.
Fatigue does set in with we older guys towards the end but I got an adrenaline
rush from realising one hour before close that 1M points was on the cards, that
made that last hour very exciting and I made it with just 10 minutes to go, by
the skin of the teeth as I made only 3 qso's after that.
73 Brian.
