Dipoles and OMNI VI.

Started out with a blazing 46 Q hour. Missed 12 minutes trying to stop RF
getting into the computer and shutting down my logging program. The fault was
the new 10 meter rotatable dipole only 15 feet directly above the shack and the
SO2R paraphernalia so I scrapped it all and went to SO1R. Then the antenna
switch decided to stop working so for the rest of the contest I had to change
the coax every time I changed bands.

Slow rate in the beginning of this contest is normal for me as I usually spend
a lot of time trying to pick up those 10 and 15 meter mults since later in the
contest it will be too late. I try to resist spending too much time on 20 in
the first two hours. Despite my efforts, I didnâ??t come close to last
yearâ??s mults (22 on 10 and 31 on 15). 10 was open but there were few
stations to work. I guess a lot of ops were seduced by the good rates on 20.

One major Stupid Act this time: QSYing from 10 to 15. Changed the antenna,
pushed the band switch on the rig and changed bands on the software. Wow, 15
was hot! Short skip with PA, MD, DE, etc. Band crowded all the way up to
21065! S&Pâ??d across the band and watched the mult total build. Boy, I was
going to have a great mult total on 15! Then someone said I was a dupe and,
checking, I was shocked to see that the rig was on 20 but the software was on
15! I had to stop and change all those QSOs to 20, with the result that I had
duped 9 stations! Sorry to all those I duped! Maybe one of these days I need
to move my station into the 21st Century.

Fortunately, it was downhill from that point. 20, 40, 80 and 160 were in great
shape with little QRN and good activity. Worked 113 stations during my first
hour on 80. Love it! 160 could have had more activity but I suppose most ops
were making hay on 40 and 80. I heard a lot of mults on 160 that couldnâ??t
hear me; in particular several of the 5-land big guns and N6RO. I think the
same thing happened in the IARU test. Maybe they are coping with local QRN.

Love this contest! Thanks to everyone involved.

See you all in the Mad River Radio Club Ohio QSO Party in three weeks!

73, Hal W1NN
