Had start up problems on Friday relatd to my new micro KEYER II. Turned out the
problem was Vista (surprise!) and the way it treats multiple sound cards. By
the time it was sorted out I was too tired to fire up so got a good nights
sleep and hit the bands Sat. morning. Was pleasently surprised to hear so many
EU stations throughout the day and into what passes for night time in AK!
Unlike the lower 48, 40M here was very spotty. Not much propagation at all
until late Sat. night, again due to the long day light hours we have now.
Tried to get a run going Sun. afternoon, but was hammered by a big EU pileup of
S2-S3 stations. I'm just not a good enough CW op yet to pull out individual
stations from such a confusing mess so I gave up and went back to S&P for new
ones on CW and mults. Had a lot of fun despite the continuing frustration of
lousy prop on 15M!
The new micro KEYER II performed flawlessly - no more garbled code from a
multi-tasking Windows system! Did much better than last year and hope to do
even better next year vs. this year. If I keep hammering away eventually I'll
feel comfortable with the EU pileups!
