Comments:
This was my first CQWW, and only my second contest ever. 20 meters was open to
EU from ZL from about 0700Z to 1100Z. QRN was low (well below S1), and the
hearing was generally very good, even on my lowly 10 meter vertical. However,
there was so much QRM that 99% of outgoing calls went unanswered. The band
never really opened much to South America or the US, esp. on the East Coast. I
had Qs with several West Coast stations, but couldn't hear even the big guns
like K1TTT. Running was very tough; I tried many times, but never had any very
successful runs -- it felt like very few people were pointing their antennas
toward ZL. I had much better luck the night before the contest with a nice 45
minute run into EU. I went into it intending to put in 40+ hours, but things
were so slow on the second day that I only did 28.
Highlights for me:
-- Hitting 28 zones (zone 22/VU and zone 1/KL1 were particularly challenging)
-- Quite a few new countries
-- Getting the VK9WDX dxped on my first call
I definitely learned a lot, particularly about deficiencies in my station and
my operating technique. Even with my weak station it was lots of fun, and I'll
definitely be back next year.
