That was different!
I decided before the contest that CQP would be CW-only for me this year. I
began to regret this strategy as soon as the rate dived in hour three, but
decided to stick it out and learn what I could.
As I result I enjoyed great 40m runs and a small bunch of fluttery EUs. And
also hours of mind-numbing low rate.
I will not repeat the experiment (well, maybe I will at solar-cycle peak). I
now have a clearer understanding of the role that phone can play in this event.
There are sixteen band-mode buckets. The main job of an in-state contester is to
fill them with as many QSOs as possible given activity, propagation, station
strengths, and operator skill. Of these sixteen buckets, half were useless this
year (both modes on 15, 10, 6, and 2) and there was insufficient activity to
fill the remainder at a sustained satisfying rate. While CW buckets are worth
1.5x phone buckets, it does not follow that phone buckets are worthless. To
decide a priori that they will remain empty is foolish.
