The $64,000 question: Where was DanWA tonight???
This was a day of firsts.
After weeks of frustrating attempts to get the 5Ghz link to the home QTH
working for eventual SO2R Remote connectivity, I finally hit paydirt -
including an incredibly low 1ms latency factor. My goal was 5ms or less. It's
gonna be SO2R REMOTE party time down the line !!!
Tonight's NS was the first contest activity from LOCUST PEAK, albeit with a
very low Carolina Windom that zig-zags horizontally and ranges from a max of
only 25 feet to 15 feet off the ground. We got it up in the 90+ degree heat
today after some creative tree limb pruning.
The real strange coincidence tonight - my first NS QSO was with Jim/W5JAW who
also uses a Carolina Windom :^)
If I ever send 'WHO' or wonder if you're working me, it is always because
someone else is zero beat with you at the same signal strength when you've sent
my call. That happened again several times tonight. Sorry I had also to hand
out some NIQ's, but I needed an intervening QSO before we could dupe.
Still many unanswered CQ's well above the 040 centerpoint, and folks seem
fearful to check out 038 or below for some reason ;-(
I had to use a tuner on each band 'cuz the SWR is extremely high (like 7:1).
Perhaps one side of the antenna got stretched too much when a tree limb fell on
it. My QLF for not lowering the antenna to the ground BEFORE making the tree
cut. Miraculously, the wire didn't break.
When I initially checked the SWR on several bands, it was whacked wayyyy out of
the ballpark (25:1). I was petrified. Then one of my workers asked if I wasn't
supposed to have two cables connected (i.e., the coax from the antenna to the 3
foot jumper off my MFJ-259). DUH!!! There was some major QLF today. Still,
the SWR is way high compared to when I had the antenna up at the home QTH, and
I'm sure the low height and weird angles have something to do with this (plus
detuning 'cuz the copper wire is touching one tree branch we couldn't reach
today).
Sorry to bail from the Post NS net so rapidly, but I wanted to pack up and get
off down the hill before dark in case the old pickup crapped out and I had to
end up walking 1.3 miles down through rattlesnake and mountain lion territory.
