Comments:
I should have bowed out grecefully, but decided to give it a go with a
respiratory infection that made me sound like Gravel Gertie. Condx seemed
better than in 2007, but that was pretty bad. The noise level on 40/80 was
pretty low (especially when compared with 24 hours later which was terrible)
and the mobile signals on 80 and 40 seemed stronger than "07. 40 was a victim
of long skip by before sunset at 2245, but surprisingly opened again to many
areas espeically western NC from 24-02Z, but activty was then quite low. I
managed to scrape up 6 Q's on 20M bacscatter; K3KO and N2TU had very good 100W
signals and N4AF was surprisngly very weak. W4MY switched to that other mode
while 40 was good in the afternoon and I finally managed to find him for a few
phone Q's, but missed him before I caught on. N4C moved me to 80 when we worked
on 40 during the day which helped; I could just copy him thru the fairly high
noise level. On 80/75, I had a choice between half of a dipole fed with ladder
line or a 1/4 wave vertical. The half dipole won out. I had just fixed it about
10 days before the test, but the wind took it's toll again. Copperweld is coming
the the rescue when it warms. AA4S had to fight rain and snow in the mountains
(Feb isn't the greatest time of year for good Wx). Thanks to AA4S, N4C, W4MY,
and W9HB and others for driving many miles to add smiles to our logs. Mults
were down from last year and it seemed that the NE part of the state was missed
by the mobiles except for W4MY near the end. My voice issues hurt the phone
totals and not nearly so many rare ones called in on phone as last year.
Fatigue/voice troubles limited acitivity after 01Z and 75 was full of NC CQ'ers
whom I had already worked. All the bonuses were pretty easy; AA4XX put Dare on
the air in a big way.
