Comments:
As they say, sometimes its better to be lucky than good. Good luck and
station and team performance improvements catapulted us to our first
USA #1 finish in the CQ WW CW multi-multi category since 1993, and
our 50th USA #1 finish in the big-four DX contests.
A coronal hole kept the k-index at 3 all weekend, making propagation
more favorable for stations at more southerly latitudes. This is
readily apparent from the nearly 4600 European QSOs at W3LPL compared
to nearly 4000 at K3LR and just over 3500 at KC1XX. This is a very
different outcome than would have occurred with low k indices when
W3LPL trailed both K3LR and KC1XX in European QSOs in 2006.
Of course, serious competitors never depend on luck alone. Tim, K3LR,
described a technique known as SWOT analysis in his recent 3830 posting.
SWOT analysis is a powerful tool that aids in the identification of
improvements in the competitiveness of individuals, teams and
organizations. You can learn more about SWOT analysis at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWOT_analysis
For several years, SWOT analysis pointed out the weakness in our run
rate and logging accuracy on 20 meters. This year we improved our 20
meter antennas, updated our radios and reorganized our 20 meter team
with the expectation of significantly improving our run rates during
the main European opening and improving our logging accuracy. This
year's 20 meter team far exceeded our expectations with ten hours of
rates over 100/hour and three of those hours exceeded 150/hour. This
is a significant improvement over last year's performance, even though
conditions were much better in 2006. We're anticipating continuing
improvement in our 20 meter competitiveness as our team further
improves its high run rate performance after a very successful initial
effort.
While major improvements were achieved on 20 meters, our other teams
also turned in winning performances. 160 meters just missed a
repeat of their 48 hour DXCC in 2006. 80 meters had great run rates
to Europe again this year. Our 40 meter team achieved excellent
results despite very difficult propagation. 15 meters exploited our
propagation advantage with almost 700 European QSOs. 10 meters had
terrible propagation, but our team was right in there with the best
of the competitors.
73 and seasons greetings from
the W3LPL Multi-Multi Contest Team
