Comments:
Had as much fun as one could have in a phone contest. WAE is my favorite one and
I always try to be there even if it is only for a couple of hours. Well, at
least for the CW part. This year I had to skip on the CW because of my final
comprehensive examination, so there I was - on the wrong side of the Atlantic,
on the wrong mode, but still there.
It started exactly as I thought it would start - miserably. Opening hour of 24
QSO's is not something one would dream for. Both 40 and 80 were quite lousy the
whole night. I didn't have cluster the first night either as any attempt to
transmit would make all of the LED's on our ancient phone modem to light up and
drop the connection. After the EU sunrise I drove back home, picked a couple of
DSL filters and after that everything went smooth. I could even follow the
socker game between PA and LZ on Saturday and chat with a couple of friends
while running on 20. Before the game I only had a few PA's but then on Sunday I
must have worked hundreds of PA/PE/PD's. Guess they just wanted to say thanks
for the presents our goalkeeper made to van Nistelrooy and Sneijder.
Anyway, with only 3 contacts on 15 on Saturday it seemed like it is going to be
another 20/80 contest. However, on Sunday 15 opened just like if someone popped
a bottle - one minute the band was dead, the next one the whole hell broke
loose. And everyone was over S9. At some point NQ4I/am called from somewhere
over Europe to tell me that my signal almost knocked down his plane. Don't know
what Rick was running in his cockpit but he cracked a pileup of S9+20 stations
with the first call. Unfortunately, the whole thing didn't last long but still
300 Q's are not bad either. Hopefully it will get better until CQWW.
Congratulations to OE6MBG for his smashing score at KC1XX. A big "thank you" to
all of you guys who called in and helped me get rid of those QTC's in what seems
to be my last WAE from K3CR. And as always - my sincere thanks to Jim, WA3FET
for letting me operate his station again.
73, Alex LZ4AX
