Comments:
We were to be in WV for Father's Day and to visit some of my wife's friends, so
thought I'd haul the QRP K2 with the internal tuner along and put a county on
the air. We wound up doing a little driving and put three counties on:
Pleasants, Ritchie and Tyler. The antenna was a 21' fishing pole clamped to the
roof rack of my wife's RAV4. I had a wire hanging down from the tip going
straight into the back of the K2 (KAT2 internal tuner did the rest). I managed
to get a good match on 80, 40, 20 and 15 (10 was "dead").
I forgot my headphones, the cable to use the N1MM keyer and to charge a third
laptop battery. Sorry if I missed anyone calling, 'tween the roadside noise,
neighborhood dogs checking me out and Rita's friends finding out how insane I
really am, hearing was difficult at times.
I brought along a WWII leg key J-45 that approximated a tourniquet on my leg.
Those guys must have been awful petite!
Several folks worked me in all three counties. Two Germans stations landed me
on 20. It was good to hand out QSOs to the "regulars" in the State QSO parties
WB8JUI, K4LTA, VA3RKM, K4BAI, W1TO and others. Only managed W8WVA once, never
could land AD8J/m (he was swamped).
The antenna blew down once while I was in Ritchie, but did a good job overall.
Hope to have a picture or two, as I'm sure it will be good for a chuckle.
May get a little more serious about it next year.
Thanks for the patience and QSOs. It was fun!
73,
Julius
