Comments:
The contest prep started about one week ahead of time for me as Iâ??m not a big
RTTU operator and I have to check and set-up all the RigBlasters and MicroHam
devices on all three stations prior to any RTTY Contest. And since the W4RM
Team had not operated a RTTY contest in two years it took days of prep time to
get things running and integrated into N1MM logging program.
The new MicroHam USB Interface II on station #3 is still not fully functional
as I could get it working FSK or Radio Control but, not both at the same time
(still a set-up configuration issue).
As for the contest, we started out on 20M and after the first hour we switched
to 15M. In hindsight we should of started on 15M and when went to 20M. But,
Iâ??m sure that not the only mistake we made. Things seemed slow on 15 / 20M
and it wasnâ??t until we moved to 40M things really started to pick-up working
some good EU runs on 40M in the early evening and when concentrating on NA as
we switched to 80M at 10PM. At the end of the first night (2AM) and 13Hours
into the contest we had 780 QSO and things were looking good (60/Hr average).
On Sunday morning thing started real slow and the rates never seemed to pick-up
at all we averaged on 33 Qâ??s / Hrs for the remaining 11 hours of the contest
with slow EU runs on 15 and 20M.
Based on the limited RTTY experience of all but one member of the team we
needed to be in the â??RUNâ?? mode the entire contest to reduce the S&P time of
tuning in the stations.
The team had a great time as a whole but itâ??s obvious that we need to become
much more polished in RTTY contesting if we ever want to compete with the Big
RTTU Boys.
