Comments:
One of my favorite contests. I prefer those contests which reward low-band
qsos. Unfortunately condx were unusually bad. Could only work 80 at first,
and after 4 hours, that became nonproductive, so I went to bed. I hoped for
improvement the next morning, but no such luck. From 1000 z until 1400 z,
nothing workable on any band. Weak and watery signals started coming through on
20m worked a few, mostly from Russia, and waited for an opening that never came.
By this time I realized that 100,000 would be about my limit and that would
require scratching out 20-30 qsos an hour on 20 m. Reluctantly I turned the rig
off and did other things. I planned to listen again on 40m about 2000 z. Nearly
3 hours before sunset, some of the big EU signals started to comr through. It
was sloww going at first, but eventually I made over 100 qsos on 40m after only
a handful the night before. I had given up on my 100,000 goal, but got
reasonably close.
As always, the OK stations were generous, several gave me much-needed
multipliers in the last half-hour. Thank you and thanks to everyone who qso'd.
So ends the RTTY contest year. While the conditions were disappointing, the
civility and camaraderie of RTTY ops is refreshing. Merry Christmas to all and
Happy New Year.
