Comments:
Thanks to Joe & Sharon for the use of the fine station NK7U!
Bumper cars, drag races, and Teeter Totters! (Phew :-)
Slow start with everyone ahead, then passed a few of you, then back down again
when everyone went to 40! It was REAL WORK to maintain and gain on anyone. I
didn't feel much advantage from the band exodus in comparison. I suppose
because I had worked all the big boys by the time the crowd arrived.
Example: I was ahead of K7RI by a few Q's at the "exodus to 40m"; RI went and
within 5-10 minutes was 18 Q's ahead of me!
As K7NV said, you just can't beat a few fast hours with your pals.
Quick Facts:
1st 40m Q: 0025 K9TM
1st 80m Q: 0149 W9RE
First 15 minutes: 29 Q's
Final 04 minutes: 0 Q's
Near Misses:
- KA9FOX worked MS & I waited patiently only to call on a clear freq. MS
gone!
- Someone worked NH, and me a W6 tried and tried, NH gone.
- XF1K working guys on 40m, my turn he's gone.
Interesting morsel: From the lack of action I tested a few scenarios at random.
Imagine this: 2 FT1000's, both on DUAL WATCH (4 VFO dials).
Scenarios:
1.) Both Radios on Dual Watch, 4 dials.
Sit and wait on all 4 frequencies for a new station and pounce it. 20/40 or
40/80 (2 vfo's per band)
2.) Focus on 1 radio w/ 1 VFO, 2nd radio 2 VFO's
A hybrid common-aggressive tactic with focus on the main open band, and setting
up 2 Freqs for pouncing on Radio 2 (or vice versa)
3.) Radio 1 CQ & 2 S&P (common SO2R)
2 VFO's, 1 per radio. CQ radio and S&P radio.
4.) Radio 1 CQ/S&P Radio 2 CQ/S&P
2 VFO's, 1 per radio. CQ/S&P both radios, all the time.
CQ'ing on the "other" radio while working a guy on the other.
With a feeling of "this is not working right" I visited all of these scenarios
in an attempt to tease the rate meter. In retro, this contest didn't seem the
best test with only [Unique callsigns worked = 173] out of 298 total worked. No
real way to test rate.
But finishing above the NL's and W/K7's, I'll take it!
I promised Joe I'd hit the gym this week in training for the CW gig; it's going
to be an all out battle next weekend.
See you there,
