KW + 1/2 wave sloper @ 125ft on a hilltop QTH
My plans for a semi-serious effort were thwarted by some Bad Chicken. I
spent most of the first night on the wrong seat! I felt better Saturday, but I
was just screwing around at that point. My new 1/2 wave sloper seems to work
pretty well, and I seem to be able to hear OK with it as well.
This was my first ARRL 160 contest since my winning effort in 1996 from N2RM.
It's a completely different contest from out here! I was amazed at the never
ending pool of W6's and W7's available to work. On the other hand, the W1's
seemed very under represented, and the few I worked were all pretty weak. I
assumed that AU was a factor, since NL7Z was way down from his usual signal, but
the solar numbers didn't support my theory.
I'm looking forward to the Stew Perry contest in a couple weeks, and I hope
to get a couple RX antennas installed at the QTH by then. I'll make sure to
avoid the chicken!
73, Dave N2NL/K6BW
