Comments:

I had laid the groundwork for weeks for this contest - clearing the decks of
work and family. My parents would come over once on Saturday & Sunday to
babysit - the XYL was going out to dinner with old friends on Saturday -
everything was in place for an all-out effort.

Then an old college buddy of mine had his fiancee unexpectedly move out
and cancel their wedding - he flew in on Friday, we convened the college
group of friends, went out Friday nite, had a big football party Saturday and
went to the Redskins game Sunday. Still I got on the air for 22 hours.

I did the first 70 minutes and went out to the local beverage establishment.
Got back at midnight (0500) put my buddy in the guest room. I figured I would
operate a few hours and then sleep. Instead I stayed in the chair for the
next 9 hours until the XYL and daughter work up at 9am.

After that it was a few minutes here and there before leaving at 3pm for
a big football/college/family party to buck up our jilted friend.
Not much time for making QSO's. Back at 9pm/0200 - put my kid to bed and
hit the radio again until almost 0700. I almost decided to stay up all
night again, but slept for five hours until 1200. My contest ended at
1500 when it was time to go to the Redskins game.

With that schedule, I had lots of time on late at night, but missed the
late afternoon/evening times on 40 and 80. I only had a few hours to find
anything on 10 - 15 was just starting to awaken on Sunday when I QRT'd.

80 was my big band at night, because that's my best antenna. But I was
beset with terrible AM broadcast interference both nights. I haven't
heard it like that before. I finally solved it by listening with my
15 meter dipole, switching back and forth to transmit and listen.

The highlight on 80 was having CN2R call me well over an hour past his
sunrise on Saturday morning. I squeezed out as many Q's as possible there
and on 160, where I found 17 VE's.

40 was disappointing because of my time constraints. I didn't hear any
JA's on Saturday morning, but finally found one that could hear me on
Sunday. Hats off to ZL6QH for hearing me on 40 as well for a double mult.

A new dipole in the trees for 20 aimed at Europe gave me lots of one-call
S&P QSO's. I raised a few by CQ'ing, but (again) didn't have the time to
really commit to that. I just didn't have enough daylight time for 15 to
really get open - I'm sure it did open to EU when I wasn't on the air.

During one of my five minute shifts, I checked 10 meters at 1540. Only
W3LPL could be heard. 90 minutes later I popped in again and flipped the
dial - all I heard was "599 36" - one call later I had ZD8A in the log,
followed by HC8N and a few others. I still had more Q's on 160 than 10.

90 minutes after that, I came back in, put the radio on 20 and heard
"599 39" - it took a few calls, but then VQ9JC was in the log.
As for 20, I found a bunch of SA mults there on night number two.
CQ'ing also brought in ZL/KM9D for a nice double mult from Zone 32.
The band is open that way late it seems, but few take advantage.

Even without much time, I worked 100 DXCC for the contest. Thanks
to those DX-peditions that put some rare stuff on. TZ5A & R1MVC were
brand new for me. FP/K8DD gave me #28 on 160 meters. Now I've got
just over two months to clear my schedule for ARRL CW....
