Thanks for all, who gave me a report !
The contest starts with a big frustration just 1 hour before the contest, as the
brand new, homebrew amplifier went is self isolation and caused a serious damage
! What a pain... Because I could not immediately repair it, I decided to start
in LP category, which is in SSB on 40m only a torture...
After the first night of 50% working contest with barefoot and 50% soldering the
damaged components, my motivation was really declined (hi) and I went for a
sleep. When I awake at 16h local time, I decided to forget the contest and start
talking to some local Ham friends to clearify how to repair the amplifier...
unfortunately I missed the component of the damaged relay finally and as shops
already closed, I concluded that for this contest there is NO AMP !!!
In fact I was not very motivated and only listend with a half ear to the
contest...
What a surprise, to find that DK9SQ was on travel here in Brugge. He is the
manufacturer of the 10m fiberpoles, which I used for my 40m 4square (see
www.qrz.com). I have never met him personally and contest-Murphy was compensated
by a nice eyeball QSO and a friendly visitor with lots of ham-talk...
Finally after some time off the station I went back to see, if there was really
still someone interested in my LP signal to copy in the QRM peaking S9+20...30dB
sometimes...
About midnight I really gave it up and went to sleep - without any clock to wake
me up again. When I awake is was almost 10h in the morning local time and I was
surprised to still hear the US-stations booming in ! I worked the last
US-station at 11:30h local time... amazing ! Never worked DX with 100wtts that
late !!!
I kept some time rag-chewing on 40m and then energy came back for a phantastic
final for the contest. I think the broken amplifier has completly demaged my
motivation until the last evening, when I realized, that I am probably a very
competive LP 40m station !
Could establish a great run to USA working split in the evening - thanks for
Zone 2 which indeed came through after some spots from US stations
As I missed all the easy DX-multies such as VK, ZL long pass etc. due to my
absense, I had to hunt the difficult ones: But they were coming - AH0, KH2, VU2,
9G1, ZD8, HZ, JT1, B1Z, etc... unbelievable. My log raised from nothing to
something really great ! In a few hours, I was back again and feeling the thrill
of serious contesting...
IN the end I am very very pleased about the result, as I know, that probably 70%
was made the last evening. If I would have worked really serious the whole
contest the score would have been amazing !
Thanks to several DX-station who ancouraged me to re-start the activity as they
report very good signals from my 100wtts station: CN2R, 9Y4W, K3LR, KC1XX and
other big guns...
Well, I will make sure to be back with at least 10db more power next time...
By the way, I used to be PA5AT, a member of the PI4COM contest team... some
people may know me under my old call. My aim is to make ON5KQ well known in the
contest world for good signals and good operation. Due to limited time and
missing maintainance menpower of the remote contest station I decided to focus
only on 40m, to at least have one band competitively equipped.
RIG: FT-1000MP barefoot
Ant: 4sqare with crossfire phasing 120degrees, see www.QRZ.com under my call.
Greetings, op Ulli, ON5KQ
(ex PA5AT, DF8MQ)
