A great contest for the following reasons:

1) 3x8 hour format, permitting more time for other activities.
2) Distance-based scoring, a an interesting alternative in contesting.

We are in the UTC time zone here in Iceland, so I started out by midnight on
Friday/Saturday. I managed to get half an hour out of the 20m band before it
closed down and 40m/80m never opened up here that night. So, I decided to take
a nap and get up for a couple of hours at 0600-0800z. The next thing I knew was
that it was 11 am!

After fixing some things I had promised my wife long ago(!) I got back on the
air at 1730z. Worked 20m intermittently during the evening and a few 40m
stations towards the end of the 2nd period. Was able to stay at it most of the
3rd period, with a few minor interruptions, working 20m and 10m.

The 10m band never opened up, and hasn't done so to my knowing for months, here
at the arctic/auroral circle. I had envisioned that I would, for change, be at
an advantage here in the remote north of the Atlantic ocean, where practially
all my QSOs would be "long haul" - mostly to Europe or America, and this would
elevate my points per QSO as compared to others. On closer examination, and
looking at the scores from others, I was probably jumping to a conclusion. Sure
enough, we have practially no short haul distances to neighboring hams (say, a
few hundred km or miles) and therefore I would not be making many "low point"
QSOs. On the other hand my distances to EU and NA are only half of what the
amateurs on either side of the Atlantic make with their QSOs all the way across
the ocean, and the points per QSO reflect this. So, I have a whole year to
think through if I can craft a strategy to turn my location into an
advantage...

Thanks for a great contest and good operating spirit - as always on RTTY.

73 - Kris, TF3KX
