James, K5FD, is trying to develop a semi-competitive SO station so I got to give
it a try. He had spent the past few months converting a used KT34XA into a
KT36XA and putting up a new tower. The KT36XA worked great! I'm used to my 3L
SteppIR (which I like)at 62 feet and the KT36XA at 70 feet seemed noticeably
better. We still have some improvements to do -- make the station SO2R (I never
heard anyone on 15M, but could only check every now and then), raise the 2L 40M
antenna to a decent height (it was only at 30 feet), and try shunt feeding the
tower on 160M -- we used an inverted L, but are looking for something better.
After taking a scheduled break to meet an obligation at work, an impressive
storm with associated lightening came through and I ended up being short 40
minutes of operating time. All in all, we have optimism for the future.
