Comments:
Having done the WPX Phone from Aruba for the last four years I decided that this
year I would also try the CW mode. John - W2GD / P40W has the QRP record and it
looked like a score that I could possibly beat. Conditions leading up to the
contest seemed pretty good for this part of the solar cycle. I started on 20m
and after the first hour I had 92 stations in my log, the second hour yielded 73
QSO's with a switch to 40m. I switched back and forth between 20m and 40m most
of the night but my rates kept falling. I then took a few hours off thinking I
would have a nice European run on 15m in the morning. Unfortunately, conditions
weren?t quite good enough for this to happen and I struggled most of the
morning, even using up more of my off time waiting for it to get better. The
afternoon was much better and even 10m opened with a 96 qso clock hour. It
still seemed that breaking the QRP record was possible. Sunday conditions were
a little worse and I easily used up my remaining off time. I even spent a
little time outdoors in the Jacuzzi enjoying Aruba?s beautiful weather on Sunday
morning while waiting for better openings. Late in the contest, I was
pleasantly surprised to discover a nice opening to Europe on 10m and I had good
rates during the last three hours on 10m, 15m and 20m. However, when the
clock switched to 0000z, I was still a little short of the 4,018,208 point QRP
record. I guess I?ll just have to try again someday.
I had a nice time doing the contest as well as enjoying Aruba?s beautiful
beaches. I also enjoyed the pre-contest dinner at Tony Roma?s with John (W2GD /
P40W), Scott (K0DQ / P40Q) and his wife, and Jacky (P43P / P40B). John and
Scott have been contesting for decades and it was certainly great to hear of
their experiences and contest strategy. John operated high power just to give
Al (4L5A / D4B) some competition and Scott did quite well running low power.
I?d like to thank everyone for their QSO?s, especially the 79 who worked me on
three bands and the 8 who worked me on four bands. Please QSL via WD9DZV.
