One of my favorite contests, one of these days I'll get it right with both
strategy and equipment. After foolishly trying to tie the feedline together on a
20m dipole for 160 in the CW NAQP (yeah, it really sucked), I decided on
something better. After carefulling cutting a hunk of #12 wire to a hundred
thirty something feet, I pulled it up amd over a tree at about 50 ft. and tied
the far end off at 20' high or so. Tied the 50ft vertical section to a short
piece of coax with an odd collection of radials. (about 20, 16'-130') Hooked to
one tuner, the SWR was about 1,000,000:1. Tried another tuner, much better,
500.000:1. Had to open the back door and shout really loud to work N4CW, just
down the road. In desperation, I simply ran the coax directly to the coax
switch. 2.5:1 at 1840. Hmmm. I may be on to something. Went outside and lopped
about a foot off the wire. 1.7:1. UREEKA, I discovered the resonant antenna!
Good for 24 mults and 55 Qs. With three hours left the headset mic and voice
keyer went south for no apparant reason. Had to finish up with a hand mic, which
slowed things way down. Oh well, NEXT time! 73, Bob
