Soabox: This time it's not old man Murphy that we have to blame but the wind
storm a few days before the contest. I arrived at the site a couple hours
early to setup only to find the 40 meter dipole and the delta loop antennas on
the ground. Two of the poles for the delta loop were on the ground one of them
bent almost 90 degrees two thirds of the way up. Fortunately both tri banders
and the 80 meter dipole were still standing.
This contest then was restricted to 80, 20, 15, and 10 meters for
us. "Writelog" logging software was a cinch. I had no problem getting it
going and do enjoy the ease with which I could manipulate it considering that
this was my first time using it. The same cannot be said about the
amplifier. Try as I may I couldn't get it to load up on 20m. You may say
that caution quickly became timidity. Not wanting to burn up the amplifier
and destroy my 920 in the process the decision was made to run barefoot.
Of course we were all ears and no voice. When my other op arrived at 2:30 am
and loaded the amp on 80m it was like turning on a light in a dark room.
This op will definitely become more familiar with linear amplifier operation
before the next contest.
