Comments:
Friday morning, with the assistance of marksman K1VR, we erected an inverted L
for 160. Things went rather smoothly until the very last moment, when the far
end string broke as I was applying the final tension. Well, it didn't really
break, a knot came out on a splice. Lesson learned, always use a bolen! With
about a dozen radials it seemed to present a decent impedance and resonate in
band. That was good because the rope to adjust things was somewhere high up in
the tree and not coming down again. I was totally amazed at the performance
(compared to the wet noodles I had used in the past). In the first couple of
hours I was both running and S&P'ing at rates over 60. At times, the rate meter
was over 100. I was having multiple callers at once! I kept thinking I was
loud and I guess I was. I also had ESP level people calling me, CA, WA and BC
stations calling me too. I ended up with 44 states, more than a dozen or so
more than what I all together in the past. I missed AK and HI, which wasn't a
surprise, but also ND, WY, OR, and NM. I heard several OR stations but they
couldn't get a good copy on me. I even heard several SB stations...where were
they in SS? I also missed five prime hours of operating Saturday evening, as I
went to the Harvard-RPI hockey game. Towards the end of the contest, I could
almost guess the state that some stations were in based on the sound of their
signal. I also noted a number of stations that were dropping their leading
dits. Can't wait for the Stu Perry.
