Comments:
This was my second try at the CQP and once again I found the contest to be both
fun and challenging. As an out of state station I find that this contest
greatly benefits from the use of the second radio. It is a good chance to work
on my second radio skills and also to blow the dust out of the station. The
NCCC has done a great job in making this contest a lot of fun to operate in by
pumping up all of the CA stations to get on the air and make a lot of noise. I
might even be hooked now ? so if I can fit the CQP on the schedule in the coming
years I am sure to be back.
As I am sure most people were I was hoping for some propagation on 10 meters.
While there were openings on 10 meters, the band was open ?long? so I was not
able to work very many stations. The few times on Sunday when signals were huge
they were only huge from the stations in the very far north of the state. 80
meters seemed to work better for me this year than last and I was sorry to miss
160 even though it only netted me less than 10 contacts last year. Sunday
morning 15 meters went bad for a bit more than an hour and the rates on Sunday
were not as good as they were in 2003.
I did have a few problems leading up to the contest this year. My 160 meter
antenna was down and while I was able to climb one of the towers that supports
it earlier in the week I had left climbing the second tower and feed point work
for Friday. When I got home Friday afternoon we had some very nearby
thunderstorms so I decided that I would work on the 160 meter antenna on
Saturday morning. Saturday morning I awoke to lots of rain and thunderstorms
that did not move out of area until just before the start of the contest. As
contest time neared it was clear that I would have to do without a 160 meter
antenna and was becoming more concerned about getting on for the start of the
contest. As I watched the weather I did move some radios around and setup the
computer and software. I also checked out a problem that had cropped up at the
start of the CW sprint. The one thing I did not check was the voice keyer ? and
that was a big mistake. Just as the contest was starting I decided that the
thunderstorms had moved away enough to hook up the radios so I planned on
starting the contest with a 15 minute off time. As I was getting everything
ready in the first 15 minutes I discovered that the W9XT card was not working.
Since I really need this to make the SO2R stuff work on SSB I decided that I
would swap computers and start 30 minutes into the contest ? of course this did
not work and the new computer had huge hum problems with the card so I decided
to go back to computer number one and see if I could get the XT card to work in
that computer ? removing all the other cards did the trick (one of them must
have died before the sprint) and I was back online but by this time I had missed
the entire first hour of the contest. This is not the way to do things. :-)
The rest of the contest was a dash to make up for the lost time. I was suprised
that the best rate of the contest came at 6 hours in for me.
Thanks for all the contacts and congratulations to all the fine scores both in
and out of the state.
